Programming in 2012 with Code Year
Is it time for everyone to learn how to code? - Well, almost 200,000 people think so and have already signed up to learn to program in 2012, using the US website Code Year.
The idea behind the website is to send participants in the course a small, interactive JavaScript coding lesson each week, via email, enabling them to steadily build up their programming skills. The main site also allows participants to track their progress and see how their friends are getting on with the same lessons.
Code Year promises that its' participants they will be "building apps, games and websites before they know it" and it has proved a hit amongst Twitter users, with thousands of Tweets containing the hashtag #codeyear.
The company behind the website is a New York City based start-up launched last August by two young tech gurus, Zach Sims and Ryan Bubinski. The pair launched their business on the back of their belief that basic coding skills are as essential to 21st-century life as being literate.
Coding is the new Latin
This feeling was echoed by Alex Hope (co-author of the Next Gen report & CEO of Double Negative) who said back in October that:
"Coding is the new Latin - we need to give kids a proper understanding of computers if they're to compete for all kinds of jobs. [As] the government is looking for opportunities for growth [they should] train the programmers that the creative and other hi-tech firms need to build their businesses."
If you're interested in learning more, you might be interested in heading over to the Code Year website to sign up for the email lessons. Alternatively, if you'd like to start right away and work a little faster, you might want to first Code Year's parent company's website Code Academy - where you can find all the lessons they've devised so far.
